What is a CIJ printer?

Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) is one of the earliest and most widely adopted industrial coding and marking technologies. It is commonly used for high-speed, non-contact printing of variable information such as dates, batch codes, serial numbers, and barcodes on a wide range of products and substrates.

While RNJet does not manufacture CIJ printers, understanding CIJ technology helps customers compare inkjet solutions and choose the most suitable marking technology for their production environment.

How CIJ Technology Works

  • Ink is forced through a microscopic nozzle, forming a continuous stream.
  • The stream breaks into uniform droplets using vibration.
  • Selected droplets are electrically charged and deflected by electrostatic plates to form characters on the product.
  • Unused droplets are collected, filtered, and recirculated back into the system.

Applications of CIJ Printing

applications for products coding and marking

CIJ technology is widely used in industries where speed and flexibility are required:

  • Food & beverage packaging
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Cosmetics and personal care
  • Wires, cables, and electronics
  • Bottles, cans, and tubes
  • Building materials and industrial components

Limitations of CIJ Technology

Despite its versatility, CIJ technology has certain drawbacks:

  • Higher maintenance requirements due to ink recirculation
  • Use of solvent-based inks, leading to consumable costs and odor
  • More complex system design compared to newer inkjet technologies
  • Regular cleaning and fluid management are essential

For many manufacturers, these factors have led to the adoption of alternative inkjet solutions.

RNJet’s Inkjet Technology Focus

As an industrial inkjet printer manufacturer, RNJet specializes in advanced Drop-on-Demand (DOD) inkjet solutions, including both Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) and Piezo DOD technologies, designed to meet the demands of modern manufacturing.

Unlike traditional CIJ systems, RNJet’s TIJ and Piezo DOD printers offer:

  • Minimal maintenance requirements
  • Lower total cost of ownership
  • Affordable, easy-to-handle consumables
  • Flexible print heights ranging from 3 mm up to 288 mm

While CIJ remains an important part of industrial marking history, RNJet’s high-resolution TIJ and Piezo DOD printers provide the most efficient, precise, and cost-effective alternatives  for today’s production environments.
